Drug Treatment Centers

If you or your love ones are experiencing problems with drugs addiction, alcoholism or other forms of addictions, it is best to consider seeking help from a drug treatment facility. There are many drug treatment centers all over the country. Some facilities are operated by the state government and are for court ordered cases or individuals who cannot afford a private inpatient program. Then there are private facilities that require patients to have insurance coverage or enough money to enroll in the program. One thing is certain, these private facilities are certainly not cheap but some insurance plans will cover the cost.

At this point you may have plenty of questions. Such as, does the individual in question need a treatment program or can they handle the issue on their own? And, if the answer to the first question is no, they cannot handle the issue on their own, what can a center actually do for them? Although drug rehab facilities vary in policy and procedure there are some standard characteristics they all share. For example, when the patient is first admitted to the facility there will be a extensive evaluation period. At this time the patient's physical and mental health will be determined and both medical and personal history will be examined.

After the evaluation period there will be a detoxification phase, which may happen in conjuction with the evaluation based on the severity of the patient's issues. Detoxification is the body's way of cleansing the body of the alcohol or drugs. The detoxification phase for many alcoholics and drug addicts is very unpleasant and can even be medically dangerous. Depending on the substance, the patient may be gradually tapered down to a zero dose. The staff at the rehab facility will monitor the patient carefully during this time and administer any medical treatment needed. Detoxification times vary widely depending on the substance in question and the severity of the addiction or dependence.

Once the patient is safely detoxed most drug treatment centers begin counseling, support group activity, behavioral therapy and occupational therapy. Patients are usually assigned tasks and directed to participate in solitary and group activities. They are taught to function in the real world without the crutch of their former addiction. Once the program is completed the patient is released if he or she is ready. Although some addicts do relapse, some leave treatment with the skills needed to remain clean and sober for a lifetime.
