Teen Centers
If you are the parent of a defiant or troubled teenager you probably deal with a large amount of worry and stress on a daily basis. The teen years are a time of changing bodies and fluctuating hormones. This can lead to mood swings and various mental issues although some teens become troublesome. If there is trouble in the home, or even if there is not, some teens end up abusing substances, behaving depressed, harming themselves, harming others, committing criminal acts or behaving in other harmful or dangerous ways. Teen centers are designed to treat these more difficult cases.
One good thing about these centers is that they keep the teens grouped by gender and age. Therefore girls and boys are kept separate. Pre-teens are kept from older teens. The centers are staffed by physicians, nurses, clinicians, dieticians, psychiatrists and therapists who are trained to work with teens. You can trust that your child will be safe and will receive the care he or she needs. The first step upon admission is usually an evaluation period. If your teen has been abusing substances there may also be a detoxification period.
After that, your teen will be introduced and integrated to the rest of the patients and taught the ropes so to speak. There may be school to attend, meetings to attend and group activities to participate in. Your teen will probably attend both private and group counseling. There may even be family counseling. And, you will be able to visit your child during designated visiting hours. The amount of time your child will need to stay in a rehab center will depend upon their individual situation. Treatment can range anywhere from a few weeks to a few months or longer.
One thing you should consider along with teen centers is family counseling and help for yourself as a parent. Even if you place your teen in a rehabilitation center you will need to deal with your own emotions regarding your decision. Your doctor can talk to you about this or refer you to a mental health specialist. Caring for a troubled family member, especially a child, can be hard on the caretaker, so nurture yourself and seek the help you need for any issues that may be bothering you.
